Deanna Ashford's book, Wild Kingdom, is another of my top shelf keepers.

Lady Rianna of Harn and her betrothed, Prince Tarn of Kabra are meant to be together, but with war on the horizon Tarn bids one of his men, Leon, to take Rianna out of the danger zone. Out of sight, but not out of mind. Along the way, however, Leon meets the seductive and beautiful Baroness Crissana and falls blindly in love with her, allowing his lust to cloud his judgement and the safety of Rianna to be at risk.

Sarin, Rianna's former husband, (originally a marriage of convenience to prevent him from invading her city, Harn) is being held captive in Freyguard. It's a dangerous place for men, as women rule and men are mere chattels and slaves. Sickened by this, it's not long before he enlists (tricks) one woman to free him. Now on the loose, he sets off on a mission for revenge.

Evil and scheming Baroness Crissana uses her feminine charms to lure her lover, Leon, and Lady Rianna away from the prince's intended direction and into the cruel hands of her warlord brother, the Ragnor of Vestfold. With this news of her capture, Tarn has no choice than to unite with his enemy Sarin in order to save the one he loves from becoming a slave to the barbarian Ragnor, who has his own dastardly demons to overcome.

Wild Kingdom is a quality historical novel where the characters leapt out of the book and tickled my fancy. The cold hearted baroness made a perfect nasty villain, and it was fun to read of how her plans backfired. Whether the hero and heroine get back together safely is another matter, but I found this an unforgettable, well written titillating romp. I was blown away with the quality of her writing, and hope you will be, too. Not wasting any time, I have already sniffed out another of Deanna Ashford's books to review - Templar Prize. Lucky me!
