Frenzy: 60 Stories of Sudden Sex

Edited by Alison Tyler

Book Review by Kathleen Bradean

erotic stories

Brevity, Polonius tells us in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is the soul of wit. Then he neglects to take his own advice and keeps talking. Alison Tyler, fortunately, understands the wisdom in that saying. In Frenzy, she brings together super short stories of sudden sex. Toss out the roses and box of candies This isn’t a prolonged seduction. This is slammed against the wall in an alleyway sex, and it’s all that much hotter for it.

With sixty stories, it’s difficult to pick a few representative ones to discuss. Believe me when I say there’s just about something for everyone here: phone sex, bondage, genderqueer, voyeurism, lust, regret, and even a little romance.

You’d think that more words would mean more story, but a skilled writer can put a full scene into your imagination with little more than a paragraph. Nikki Magennis needed less than a hundred words to make “Madrid” one of the most memorable sex scenes in this anthology.  Tara Alton’s “Mute Witness” is another ultra-short that delivers more heat and humor than most longer works. Just because it’s short doesn’t mean you have to read it fast. Linger over this one, and enjoy how nasty it is.

“Waiting” by Jen Cross was so raw that my throat hurt after I read it. It’s not often that a writer can convey such need, or create a character that vulnerable, but when it happens, wow. I could almost taste the cold coffee and dreaded the end of her last cigarette. You know the lover isn’t coming back. I know it. The waitress knows it. But this character is going to keep waiting, because that’s all she has.

In “Her Room” by Carl Hose, a man goes into his roommate’s room and looks through her drawers. You might get an ick vibe off the story when he jerks off into a pair of her dirty panties. Up until that moment she got home, it didn’t seem obsessive enough to make me uncomfortable, but this one may be more squick than squee for readers.

“You in Your Apricot Panties” by Jeremy Edwards is the rare combination of sweet and hot. Some readers like to see the strangers who meet and tear each other’s clothes off kind of stories; I have a soft spot for established couples who are still crazy for each other. Unlike “Her Room,” here the obsession for a particular pair of panties seems downright wholesome, but still undeniably hot.

And while I may have a soft spot for established couples, EllaRegina’s “Faceless Filly Seeks Rider,” is a sex with a stranger fantasy that get me going. In the form of a CraigsList ad, it is cheeky, smart, funny, and deliciously dirty. Here’s a story that can quote French pornographic literature and make it seem earthy instead of pretentious.

There are many other stories worthy of note in this anthology beyond the few I’ve mentioned. Even if a particular story doesn’t work for you, there are many that will, and as each story is short, you won’t invest a lot of time finding something you like. What would Polonius have to say about this anthology? Probably something long winded. The Queen was right to tell him, “More matter with less art.” In other words: Cut to the chase. In Frenzy, Alison Tyler brings you stories that do just that.
