The Ninety Days of Genevieve

Sometimes it doesn’t matter when you read a book, it still holds the same thrall no matter the year.  The Ninety Days of Genevieve by Lucinda Carrington was first released in 1996 but I laid my hands on a Black Lace 15th Anniversary edition in 2009. However, I don't necessarily place this book as based in the 90’s, it seemed relevant to here and now from the very first sentence.

Sex in exchange for a business deal is not a new plot line but as with anything, it is the authors take that can make such a difference and I did not find anything old hat or predictable about this novel. Genevieve’s 90 days of sexual service prove to be challenging, erotic and liberating. She discovers the freedom in surrendering completely to another person and is pretty surprised to find she really rather enjoys it.

Carrington’s style of writing is very easy on the eye and the mind. She lets the story unfold at an even place and the language is evocative, but not over the top.  She sets each scene effortlessly, including little details that add to the atmosphere without over complicating her descriptions.

Each character is built up layer-by-layer, chapter-by-chapter. Even the elusive lead, James Sinclair, has a rounded personality, even if you only see it from a distance for most of the book.  Not only are there convincing characters they are placed within a complex and fantastic plot.  Even though it seems a million miles away from my simple, uncomplicated life the erotic exhibitionism that Genevieve experiences seems completely real and believable.

My favourite scene involves a motorbike and several hot and talented men. Not only is it an exciting fantasy it is well written and well paced. It certainly made an impression on me. There are several scenes like that, and that is what makes this a good erotic read, you are kept at a slow rolling boil through the whole thing and the climax at the end is not a let down in the slightest, though it was a tad predictable. A good finish is a good finish though, even when you guess what it is before time.

This book is well worth a read, especially if you enjoy domination and submission as well as a little bondage and a little pain. It’s a delicious combination that isn’t too heavy and involved. It is a good read for someone curious about BDSM, or for the others like me out there who like the domination but cannot take more than just a little pain.

I’m glad the 15th Anniversary reprint of The Ninety Days of Genevieve caught my eye because it would have been a shame to have never read such an erotic and thrilling book.
