Aren't all first dates blind dates in a way? Someone you don't know - in partner terms - who might become a lifelong love, or someone you never see again. Usually somewhere in between, I guess.

I have to confess a bias. I asked my first year University mate to ask his Year 13 (one year younger) girlfriend if she had any friends who wanted to go to a special dance. She found one - that was 1967, and we are still married. But it could easily have been something I hardly remember.

It's an opportunity to meet someone you wouldn't meet otherwise - if you are into dating, it's as good a chance as any other - and not a lot to lose.

I met my wonderful boyfriend of 4 months online, and he is amazing. We got to know each other for a month, including some phone calls before we met. I just knew he'd be great for me, and he is. He doesn't drink or go to bars. I work with children and don't meet anyone at work. There's nothing wrong with either of us.

If we're talking about traditional blind dates, I think they are very awkward and you have to trust the person who set you up. I can't think of many people I would trust to know me that well and the kind of man I'd want to date.

Blind dates are the pits. It is nothing more than someone meddling in to someone else's life. A person goes along, happy and content, and other people can't stand it. They have to try and make a person conform to their way of behavior, usually fixing them up with someone they're not compatible with. 

This very thing happened to me when I came home on leave when I was in service. My long nosed sister-in-law just had to fix me up with this girl she knew. The situation was very strained until I pinned down on the lady and she admitted that she had a boyfriend and was wishing that he was there instead of me. I remedied that situation. I got up and left. I also told my sister-in-law that I didn't need her assistance in finding someone to date. Thanks, but No Thanks.

Not to let you down or spoil your mood:  But I think blind dates are just bad & immoral. They may be ok as a last resort, say if you haven't had a single good relationship going on for a long time, or all your boyfriends/girfriends have turned out to be irresponsible d***s. Here are two reasons I'd like to point out why I feel this way:

1. I am a guy & as a male, when you (by chance) fall in love with a female & then your heart beating rapidly, a want to be with her & then you summon all your courage, overcome your shyness & talk to her, make her feel how much you feel about her & she likes you & agrees to come with you on a date.

Now, that gives the male an emotional, mental satisfaction & it is a sense of achievement - a victory (first of several, of course) for the person - that is the true spirit.

However, if you set up a blind date, where an external agent persuades both of them to meet, without each of them even knowing or having seen each other - what the hell is that? Is that the spirit? They say god made man brave, not just in profession where he has to do hard work, but also in social life to 'win' a female's heart - and look now, by blind-dating what are you doing - showing that it is just for cowards and losers?

2. Well, I must say that blind dates as such are not bad, but they will lay the roots and foundation for a much bigger evil in society - the forced marriage system. I can't comment on that right now, as that will take a post as big as this one already is p

So, am I trying to convince people to abolish blind-dating? Well, no - but I am asking you people to just keep this as a last-resort, in case none of the regular dating works out.

I have been on a lot of blind dates in the past; some good, some great and some very bad. However, given the chance to do them all over again I wouldn't pass up a single one. Each one is the opportunity to meet a new person and the possibility of a new relationship. Sure not all of them will work out; however each is a possibility. And no one has ever won the lottery without buying a ticket.
