I was raised mostly by my stepmother because my father was in the service overseas a lot. As a boy I developed problems with my foreskin. As she was a nurse, she knew the treatment that I would have. She actually instructed the doctor to make it fairly tight. I must say that after the procedure, my problems subsided and I have never regretted her actions. 

Not being circed is fine if one never has those problems, but for me my stepmother saved me from a lot of pain and discomfort.

Hey Matt [see entry below], my husband is not circumcised, and the only one you got right is wrinkly when flaccid, but so are many circumcised. My husband's penis does not have a slimy helmet, doesn't have a distinct unpleasant odor (unless he doesn't shower, but then all people have a distinct unpleasant odor when they don't shower), and no he doesn't come too easily. 

So, you are making a false generalization. And yes, it certainly can be questioned.

Let me balance the arguments up for you all. With the best will in the world, you have to admit...

Circumcised:  Looks better, doesn't smell, Lasts longer.

Uncircumcised:  Wrinkly flaccid, slimy helmet, faint distinct unpleasant odor, So sensitive you come too easy.

It is undoubtedly cruel to cut the skin off a baby's penis, but the long term advantages over being uncircumcised given above simply cannot be questioned. And this is why circumcision is and always will be taboo. It takes a brave parent to put their son through it for his own good in the long term. It is the easy way out to leave it alone.

You're the parent it's your choice, and your choice alone. There is no wrong or right answer to this topic. A decision either way has its merits.

To Mike: [see entry below] All of your arguments are good, and as a guy this is certainly your area, but I have to say one thing. I'm not sure if you were trying to draw a parallel or not, but removing the clitoris is not the same as circumcision of the foreskin. Removal of the clitoral hood only is the 'same' as removing the foreskin. To remove the actual clitoris would be tantamount to removal of the entire penis. Yikes!

Editors, do you know of a good site that shows these parallels? I saw one once but can't remember it now. Thanks!

I was born at a time in the UK when it was the practice to circumcise infants. Thankfully I escaped the operation which, again thankfully, it has all but died out in most European countries. The justification for it is a bit thin! 

Hygiene - Well we now have a wonderful invention called 'washing' in 'baths' and 'showers'. Even without this serious infection risk is more than a bit unlikely.

Looks better - Well does it ? What other parts of our God given bodies do we need to modify? I suspect the only thing that makes it looks good is on American doctors bills; its easy money.

Religious reasons - Taking away the foreskin, or for that matter the clitoris, makes sex less enjoyable. Some cultures will tell you otherwise, but how do they know as they are all circumcised themselves. It was thought that it would prevent boys from masturbating. Some religions would deny people taking pleasure from their own bodies. Circumcision is, supposedly, a way of doing this. In Victorian mental institutions compulsive masturbators even had their penis's removed entirely.

The idea of mutilating a child's sexual organs, at any age, for anything other than necessary medical reasons is outrageous in this day and age. And to do it as part of a religious ceremony is, frankly, more than a bit weird.

If adults wish to undergo the practise then, like tattoos and body piercing, then it is their right. Female circumcision is an offence in the UK and other Countries. The circumcision of boys should be equally outlawed. It is simply Child Abuse.

You are so wrong, Henry [see entry below]. I'm an Obstetric and Neonatal nurse, and let me set the record straight - circumcision hurts babies just as much as it hurt you. I'm not expressing the right or wrong of it, or stating my opinion. I just want you to know that babies suffer through it also. 

The pain is brief — but real. For generations, millions of babies were routinely circumcised without anaesthetic, in the erroneous belief that circumcision doesn't hurt them - and in spite of those babies screaming during the procedure. 

Recent studies confirm that circumcision of the newborn causes severe and persistent pain. A 2005 study shows that newborn babies feel more pain than adults but it is often undertreated by doctors. 

So think twice before subjecting babies to circumcision. It can always be done after, and as an adult who can deal with pain better.

I wasn't circumcised and i started having problems (infections) so at the age of about 10 i got the surgery . it was the most painful thing ever and embarrassing. But now i have no more problems. So you might as well do it at birth because it doesn't hurt then .

My grandfather had to have his foreskin circumcised when he was 17, because it wasn't big enough to fit around. I found I have the same genetic disorder (go figure). I have not had the courage to get myself circumcised at 19. I have found that (beating the meat) keeps it enough to fit around, but if I don't for like a month, then it sucks because the skin tears and I have to start the process over again.
