A interesting article on circumcision in the UK newspaper, The Guardian. A non-Jewish mother objected to her Jewish mother-in-law forcing circumcision on her grandson. I am not Jewish and nor is my husband but we were both born in the 1940s when male children in the UK were circumcised regardless of religion, a hang-over from Victorian thinking on sexual health. 

As I entered my puberty in the mid-1950s it was no surprise that every boy I had sexual contact with was circumcised and since 1956-57 were pre-pill days, we girls tried to avoid vaginal sex, most of our sexual activity being a mix of sucking the boy off or taking our knickers off and helping the boy masturbate into them, putting them back on once he had ejaculated into them, enjoying the sperm's creamy warmth on our nether regions.

I was circumcised at the age of 3-1/2 years, and do remember it quite well and very traumatically. I had my tonsils out and was circumcised at the same time. Just from reading some postings, I thought I would feel awful being a happily non circumcised male. Yes it makes masturbation easy, but health wise, it's important to keep the underforeskin clean at all times. I've heard many stories that non circumcised penises was not attractive to many women, I suppose it is for some.

As an American woman (43 years old), I never gave any thought to circumcision. The image of the circumcised penis is the standard in this country, unfortunately. My current partner is uncircumcised, and it surprised me at first, but it also excited me at the same time. As our relationship advanced, my excitement and appreciation deepened. I am amazed by how the foreskin functions (and perhaps, by the fact that it did not occur to me before).

The overwhelming lack of awareness of the truly elective nature of this procedure in this country angers me. The natural, uncut penis makes sense on several levels, and legitimate medical complications seem to me the only logical reason to interfere.
