 I'll be honest on this an say, I've never had a guy take me while on my period. I've had numerous friends tell me they enjoy it but during my period I'm not in the mood for full sex. I do enjoy it the day I'm supposed to start because it feels good, but once I'm flowing...forget it.

My partner and I have been together for over 20 years, and our practice in this regard has varied. The first time this issue arose, we'd been together for a few months. I started one night and didn't bother telling him. I thought, well, it's just a very light flow and who cares. During sex he noticed and was startled for a moment, thought he'd hurt me or something. In retrospect I should have warned him! A bit awkward. Wish I'd had a "protocol" to consult back then.

After that, we'd regularly have sex during menstruation, just put a towel down for the mess and shower after. In those early days of the relationship, our sex was very frequent and abstaining for days didn't happen very often.

The extra lubrication made for an extra slippery experience which we both enjoyed. To tell the truth though, my libido is never very high during my period; it peaks just before and just after (and is fairly strong the rest of the month as well)

As time passed, we stopped having sex during my period. For one, we tended to have sex less often, not every day, and waiting 4 days or so was not impossible. (I agree that the wait makes for better sex after the fast!) For another, the mess was a hassle. For yet another, I could take it or leave it at that time. I suppose some of it is psychological (feeling messy and not terribly sexy, though I don't have hang-ups about it overall) and some, MOST, is physical (I don't have any major symptoms, but I tend to feel tired and bloated. I just don't feel like having an orgasm then. It is almost like my body is resting and preparing for my next big libido surge, which comes as the end of my flow approaches.)

One note: We enjoy oral sex a lot, but he has never performed cunnilingus on me during my period, nor would I want or ask him to. Just our preference.

I prefer frankness, and I suspect most men do. Menstrual meds and products are in the public eye, no secrets there, and it really is not a good idea to use euphemisms about something that is so obviously part of being feminine.

Call me old fashion (I'm 26!), but I like the idea of abstaining from sex during a women's period. First, yes, I'm squeaked about sex and blood. And second,I find sex after a period of abstinence is incredibly hot. It's like days of foreplay, especially if we cuddle, indulge in casual sexual touches during the day, sleep nude. All that leads up to some very fine sex.

Well, being a lesbian, the period thing has never bothered me. Amazingly, women I've been with have had no problem either.  Now, if my flow is extremely heavy, the last thing I want is a woman to do anything, but if moderate to light, I have no problem.

Old prostitute's trick:  Just douche and insert a makeup sponge against the cervix to catch any blood.  Women in the brothels (I'm from Nevada) used to work three weeks and get one off, and everyone assumed that one week was during their period.  But they simply used this trick, so they could enjoy their week off!

Way back when I still had a period, it was a non-issue after I outgrew one-night stands.  I never had a lover who claimed to be grossed out by sex during my period.  In fact, a couple relished it all the more, including cunnilingus; military types called it 'earning your blood wings,' a wry salute to the practice of slamming the jump wings into a newly qualified parachutist's chest.

In general, the flow seemed to slow down during sex and a nice big (dark-colored) bath towel under the hips was all that was required.

My experience, way back when I had both periods and a partner, was completely the opposite.  He wanted nothing to do with me at that time. And to be honest, I was usually so damned miserable, I wasn't the least bit interested in anything sexual.  So, what it comes down to is "different strokes for different folks."

I think I might be a little insensitive on this one. I've never really understood the magnitude with which some people view the problem. It's not as if sex isn't gooey anyway.

Long term or one-night stands, my response is the same: I'm bleeding like a stuck pig, but I'm horny as hell. So, I've gotta warn you, this is going to be good - really good - but messy.

On a practical level - this is the perfect time for sex in the shower. If you absolutely insist on horizontal, shower curtains work real good.
