I think doggy style could still be considered vanilla.  As far as I know, it's the natural copulation position for all mammals, so I don't see how that position could be considered kinky.  I think the people who tout the missionary position are also those who think humans are somehow different from other animals when it comes to fucking.  The only thing different that the missionary position allows is mouth kissing.  In my experience, once the serious fucking starts, the kissing actually stops. One thing at a time, please don't distract me.

I've always found the ordinary missionary position to be a little awkward -- not much leverage, and if the guy's a little on the heavy side, there's a little too much padding in the way.  Plus, when it's all done and they flop down on top of you... Omph!  Can't breathe!  So other positions are just more convenient.

I also think gay sex can be vanilla.  One would assume that there are gay people who only have sex using the regular body parts with which they were blessed.  So I guess my definition of vanilla sex is sex using only natural body parts -- no toys, costumes, fetish items, props of any kind.  There are those who think that dressing up in heels, stockings and a garter belt (whether you're straight or gay) is kinky.

I think people decide for themselves what is and isn't vanilla. Frankly, I don't understand why any of it has to be labeled.  It is what it is.

I would say that the definition of vanilla sex is subjective up to a point.  I wouldn't say it really implies the "get it over as quick as possible" mentality or an aversion to enjoying sex, only because I've known people who were vehement about being only into vanilla sex, but they were also VERY into sex.  They even enjoyed watching porn, as long as it was basically vanilla porn.

I would say that vanilla sex could easily lead to the desire to get it over as soon as possible, because one or both partners could easily get bored.

During my research on the subject of fetishes, one of the most disturbing things I read was that at some professionals believe that fantasizing about "deviant" sex while having "normal" sex counted as being a problem.

I did some research.  It seems that overall a preference for anything other than very plain vanilla sex is considered a mental illness or a leaning toward mental illness, and that something has gone terribly wrong in a person's development to cause the perversion.

Weird.  I've always thought of it in just the opposite. If a person is creeped out by the idea of varying from the most basic, then they must have some hang-ups about sex. Not to say you have to like or want to try any particular variation, but the lack of an open mind altogether indicates some deep seated problem.

There is general agreement that people usually form true paraphilias or fetishes at a very early age, although there is debate as to how early.

I think that there are levels of fetishism.  For most people, these fetishes are preferences, not imperatives. Only a small minority are sexually dysfunctional without their trigger object or situation.
