Jesus was the ultimate submissive in that he suffered greatly even unto death. There is a quote somewhere (I'm not going to look it up) that says on the Thursday before he gets crucified, he knows what he's in for and is reluctant. He prays and says, "Please take this cup from me. But only if it is Your will to do so, otherwise I will suffer as You see fit."

These are the words of a submissive. The whole of the Christian theology is about submitting your personal will to that of God, working hard to align your actions and behavior to the "will of God."

I guess it all becomes a bit of an issue of what point of view you wish to take, because according to Christian theology, Jesus is God incarnate. And so as a facet of God, Jesus would have Dominant characteristics as well as submissive ones. In perfect balance and the ability to use whatever needed depending on the situation. I'm thinking now of the throwing the money lenders out of the temple incident.

Nope, I agree with Teela here. Jesus as Dom. More benevolent than some, but certainly no sub on any level. This is an interesting idea to me. There is plenty of evidence to sway someone's view to a Dominant personality. He had anger, witness the temple scene with the moneylenders.

To my way of thinking, Jesus is very much a dominant. I would argue that this became clear to him in the wilderness during which the simultaneous pull toward the two ends of the pole resolved toward the dominant end. He had to concern himself with those who submitted to his teachings.

I would offer that records now demonstrate more and more that whoever and whatever Jesus may have been, he was nothing like the tempered and diminished character that remains to us after all the editing, cuing and reorganizing.

It also seems that he might well have been naturally erotic but not in a conventional way. That is not an excuse to infuse D/s in Jesus, which would be an utter waste of time. It is rather a way of seeing that the strictures he imposed on himself forced him out of his community and to form his own. So he had to 'remake' himself. That would suggest to me that in many respects, he would have had an unconventional point of view, including but not limited to, sexuality.

I am surprised that anyone could see Jesus as a dominant rather than a submissive (assuming those are the only two choices). I thought one of the major points of the New Testament was that Jesus submitted himself to the will of his father (God), even though, as an equal member of the trinity, he could have evaded death. "Not my will, but thine, be done," I believe it says, when recounting the story of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.

But hey, I could be wrong. I never did accept the idea of Jesus (or anyone else) dying for my sins; of worshipping a god who demanded human sacrifice; or that I had myself done anything so horribly sinful as to merit the death penalty. But what do I know? I've been a Catholic, a Presbyterian and a Reform Jew, and I ain't dead yet -- but if I'm backing the wrong horse, theologically, when I am dead, I'm gonna be good and dead.

Jesus as dominant or submissive? Very interesting. On the one hand, he is traditionally addressed as 'Lord.' Yet he seems to have used very little coercion. There was the violence in the expulsion of the moneylenders, and there was certainly anger in some of the sermons. Don't forget the parable of the sheep and the goats, and "depart from me, ye accursed," etc.

Yet if you compare him to any political leader, there seems to be little attempt to force anything on anybody. So he is not coercive (though often threatening -- perhaps this is a contradiction) but no milksop by a long shot.

Consider D/s play ultimately, it is or is supposed to be consensual. Perhaps that is what God/Jesus (I view them as one, as a Christian) is doing here. In some ways, we are invited (not forced) into a relationship with him in which we are the submissives, and are to be obedient. But of course, there is that little matter of the crucifixion. To allow oneself to be crucified does not strike me as at all the action of a dominant. In fact, the crucifixion, looked at in a sexual context, is more like gang rape or castration. This takes us altogether out of the realm of D/s and into hell.

And where does the Eucharist fit in? Bloody cannibalism! I love it! (I'm not being sarcastic.) It's been a long time since I took the Eucharist, but I have sometimes walked up to the altar with a feeling I was about to die. And I cannot say it was a bad feeling. It was exciting. It felt like forbidden suicide, or like the offering up of oneself for death. It makes me think I should do it more. Now here was I, about to consume the blood and body of the Lord, putting me in a position of dominance one might therefore think. After all, it is the cannibal who has scored a victory over her dinner, has she not? So why does she feel more like a submissive?

Jesus Christ is the Great Subverter. The Powerful One. The Powerless One.
