I love writing flirting scenes in my romances. Thereโs something sensual and erotic about two people engaging in teasing and verbal jousting when the attraction is mutual. Sometimes you can radiate more heat with a few lines of suggestive dialogue than with a paragraph of in-your-face eroticism. Not that thereโs anything wrong with that.
I write these encounters in all of my mystery/thrillers, even between characters where Iโve already established a relationship. Take this one, from “Warning Shot,” book three in the Nick Seven series:
Nick brought Feliciaโs hand to his mouth and kissed it. โThis is one of the reasons Iโm glad I have you around. You always keep me focused.โ
โIs that the only reason youโre glad Iโm around?โ
โNo, but itโs a long list.โ
She moved to Nickโs lap and kissed him while running her fingers through his hair. โIโve got nothinโ but time, tough guy.โ
He caressed her cheek. โYouโre resourceful, self-confident, and independent.โ
โYou just described a Boy Scout. Canโt you do better than that?โ
He kissed her. โYouโre incredibly hot, passionate about everything, and waking up next to you makes all my teenaged dreams come true.โ He paused. โPlus, you make a mean stir-fried shrimp.โ
Felicia laughed and lightly smacked his arm. โIs that the best youโve got? You were always better at foreplay.โ
โYou make me feel alive and I canโt wait to start every day all over again with you.โ
She cupped his cheek and peered into his eyes. โThatโs what I was gonna say. Itโs kinda hard to explain, but when I first saw you, all that time ago in London, it was like a jolt of electricity went through me. When you quit the agency and I went back to Barbados, I felt this big empty inside, like somethinโ vital had been taken away.โ
He traced her jaw with his fingers. โSame thing I felt.โ
Then thereโs this film noir-type exchange from “Lido Key,” book two in the Vic Fallon series. If this doesnโt put you in mind of films like “Double Indemnity” and “Body Heat,” you probably arenโt a fan.
When Vic locked eyes with Ariel Weston across the bar, there was no escape. He moved to the stool next to hers, drawn in like a marlin hooked by a determined fisherman.
โExcuse me, Miss, but Iโm new in town. Could you please direct me to your house?โ
She began with a chuckle that escalated into full-blown laughter, then she playfully smacked Vicโs forearm. โThatโs so lame, itโs cute!โ
โThank you.โ
Her eyes scanned him up and down. โI donโt think Iโve seen you around here before, have I?โ she asked in a low, smoky voice.
โNo. Do I need a reservation to sit here?โ
She laughed again. โA smart-ass. I like that quality in a man. Where are you from, smart-ass?โ
โA whole other world. Would you like me to provide references before we go any further?โ
She placed her hand on his on top of the bar and locked eyes with him. โI donโt think thatโll be necessary, but since weโre going to be friends, I think I should call you something more formal than smart-ass.โ
โAre we going to be friends?โ
โUnless you think you already have enough of them.โ
โYou can never have too many friends. Why donโt you call me Blake?โ
โIs that your real name?”
โNo, my real name is Vic. I just use Blake to fool people. What should I call you besides totally hot?โ
โI like that, but letโs go with Ariel.โ
โPretty name.โ
โThank you. Iโm rather attached to it.โ She massaged his hand. โI should tell you something, Vic. Iโm married to a rich older man, we donโt have any kids and weโve always had separate bedrooms. He doesnโt really notice if Iโm not home, since heโs only there long enough to change clothes before he meets his latest girlfriend. He doesnโt ask me any questions and I donโt grill him about where he drops his pants. Does that bother you?โ
โOne manโs ignorance is another manโs bliss.โ
โOoh, a clever smart-ass. Thatโs another quality I like.โ
โAnd weโre just getting started.โ
And finally, this is from the romantic comedy, “The Sweet Distraction”:
โI should probably go,โ George said. โIโm cutting into your tanning time.โ
โWhy do you have to run off?โ Cookie teased.
โIโm working. Remember?โ
โYou know what they say about all work and no play.โ
โI always make time to play.โ
โLike what?โ
โPoker, blackjack, the ponies once in a whileโฆโ
โAre you good at picking winners?โ
โI find it depends on whoโs holding the riding crop.โ
โOoh, is that a kinky side coming out of hiding?โ
He winked. โIโll never tell.โ
โI like to play, too.โ
โWhat games do you like to play, little girl?โ
โPass-out, strip dominoes, escaped convict and the Wardenโs wifeโฆโ
โThose are a little out of my league.โ
โMaybe you should move up from Little League to the majors. Thatโs where they play night games.โ
โIs this where you ask me if I know how to whistle, then tell me to just put my lips together and blow?โ
She raised her sunglasses and looked at him. โI can think of a much better use for your lips.โ
