Scene Setting

Chloe unlocked the door. “No-one’s here,” she said. “She’s back tomorrow morning, him in the evening.”

Tony followed her in. “I guess we’re not breaking in.”

“He should’ve remembered my spare key.”

She opened a cupboard, lifted a loose floorboard and emptied a packet of frozen prawns into the hole. “Keep the bastard guessing for weeks.”

“Bedroom?”

She pointed at a door. “Why?”

“A scheme.” Tony pulled a box out of the nightstand drawer. “Hers.”

“How do you know?”

“Sensitive to latex, always bought her own condoms. I’ll leave a wrapper out.”

“Leave a condom in the toilet.”

“Huh?”

“Greg’s crap at flushing them away. She’ll see it and think he’s cheated on her already.”

“Sneaky.”

He took one and put the box back.

“She really hurt you, didn’t she?”

“He hurt you too. Our best mates doing it behind our backs.”

They looked at each other. “Meant we got to know each other better,” Chloe said.

“Yeah, I always liked you, Chloe.”

“Gonna ask me out?” she teased.

“Would you?”

“Of course. Daft git. I fancy you too.”

He looked at the bed. “Maybe some scene setting?”

She grinned. “Mess up the bed and use that condom?”

“You bet.”
