Angela White Interview: In Steamy Detail

Compliments of Val Williams from Gamelink

Angela WhiteWhat was your pathway to porn – did you dance, do phone sex, webcams, or did you come to it out of nowhere?

My journey into porn didn’t happen by accident. I had been planning my entry since the moment I first saw pornography at the age of 14. I was criticized throughout my teens for my uninhibited sexuality. I was shamed for being a “slut” and a “lesbian.” Porn was the first place I saw sex being celebrated. It was also the first place where I saw curvy bodies like mine being represented positively in the media. I saw the adult industry as a sex-positive space where I could explore and express my sexuality with sex-positive peers. I’ve danced a couple of times, and I did a lot of webcam shows in Australia, but performing in porn is where I started and where I feel I belong.

Talk about your First Class Honors in Gender Studies and your advocacy for the rights of sex workers – it seems like there’s probably an interesting intersection there.

For my honors thesis I conducted qualitative research into female experiences in the Australian pornography industry. My aim was to engage directly with performers since the vast majority of academic and feminist literature on the topic makes claims about the experiences of performers without actually speaking to the performers themselves. My research coincides with my activism in that I want to provide a platform for performers’ voices to be heard. Some of the findings from my research were published last year in the The Routledge Companion to Media, Sex and Sexuality. Not surprisingly, the stigma and shame that all sex workers face was a heavy burden that performers felt. But what I found most interesting were the ways the participants were opened up to new sexual experiences through their work in porn, and how this often led to a fundamental shift in how they conceptualized their own sexual identity.

You have spoken out for the rights of (and better treatment for) sex workers. Have you gotten to a place where you feel your own experience as a sex worker is as good as it could be, or is there still room for improvement?

I’m happy to see so many positive changes within the adult entertainment industry, but there is always room for improvement. There are more and more women at the helm, directing and producing amazing quality, ethically shot movies. And with so many revenue streams from webcam shows to feature dancing, performers are in a more powerful position to say no to work that doesn’t make them feel comfortable or doesn’t build their brand. However, the adult industry could be more inclusive of different body types, ethnicities, abilities, and sexualities. But the biggest problem remains the stigma and discrimination we face from outside of the industry. Despite all the talk of sex work becoming more socially acceptable, sex workers can still have trouble securing loans, are denied access to legal protections, and their work can be used against them during custody battles.

One of the women in our office says she isn’t a lesbian but she still wants to motorboat your amazing breasts. I know you Love Women, as is evident from your movies, but is there a difference between the love you get from your female fans and your male fans?

I don’t think there is much of a difference. I have female fans that follow me for my activism and my body positivity. But there are also plenty of women who follow me because they love to watch me fuck. I’m happy to have such a diverse following.

Were your friends surprised when you got into porn, or were you the kind of person that they expect that from?

No, it didn’t come as much of a shock. I was very sexual in high school and wasn’t shy about expressing my sexuality.

If you weren’t doing porn, what would you be doing instead?

I would be continuing my research on the adult industry and human sexuality. The diversity of human sexual experience and desire is infinitely interesting to me and there is always more to learn.

You’ve only ever performed under the name Angie or Angela White, as far as I can tell. Did you ever have a second choice for a porn name?

No, I chose to use my legal name for political reasons. I never wanted to hide behind an alias because I don’t feel I should have any shame about expressing and exploring my sexual desires on camera. I am proud of what I do. I’m also in a privileged position in that I can afford to be be “out” about my work. I fully embrace my sexuality and I hope my openness can help others embrace theirs.

If you could make any movie, with unlimited creative control and no limits on what you could do, what would it look like?

That movie would look like the movies I already direct and produce. It’s not that I have an unlimited budget, but I don’t think big budgets or elaborate sets are essential to the production of good quality porn. For me, it’s all about the connection between the people having sex. Real chemistry and authentic passion are the key ingredients to making hot porn that resonates with viewers.

What was the best or worst thing that ever happened to you on a shoot?

My best days on set are when I get to have an incredible sexual experience and learn something new about myself. I grow through my scenes as a performer, director, and most importantly, as a being. My worst days are when I get bored. I feel I can create chemistry with anyone who is present and willing to connect with me. But if my partner isn’t present during a scene I feel like we are wasting our time. Boredom may not seem like that big of a deal, but it is demoralizing to feel bored doing the thing you love most. Thankfully, those are rare occasions.

Do you watch your own scenes?

I have to watch my scenes because I edit all of my own movies. It makes me a better director and performer because I can anticipate what I need in the editing suite and I learn from my mistakes.

Is there one of your movies that represents more than any other your private life, or how you are off-screen?

There are 2 scenes that come to mind. My scene with Manuel Ferrara for Angela 3 that won the 2018 AVN Award for Best Boy/Girl Sex Scene; that scene changed me and will remain one of the most incredible sexual experiences of my life. The second scene is another with Manuel. We did an amazing scene for RAW 32 where our intimacy and passion are palpable. We take our time with each other and even have a bath together. That was a very special scene and is representative of how I like to have sex off-camera.

It seems like every year you get nominated for more awards, and you hit it big at the AVN Awards this year. Have you been doing anything differently, or has Angela Time just come round at last?

Thank you. It’s incredible to have my work nominated, and winning so many awards this year is an honor that I’ll be forever grateful for. Moving to the U.S. and shooting consistently with top companies has certainly taken my career to the next level. I’ve always maintained a passion for what I do, so in that sense I’m not doing anything differently. But everyday that I’m on set I learn more about myself as a performer and a director, so I am constantly growing. This year I’m shooting more than I ever have on a wider variety of projects, from gonzo through to features. I’ve also started writing scripts and am doing some big collaborations this year. But my commitment to authentic, passionate sex will always remain the same.

You have one day to live, and you can spend it doing anything you want, regardless of cost or difficulty. What do you do?

I would spend the day with the people I love. I wouldn’t want to do anything fancy, just cuddle and eat some nice food.

You have a tattoo that says “Love Sucks” on the back of your neck. Why did you get it, and does Love Still Suck?

Love only sucks because it is so wonderful. Nothing makes you feel more accepted, more at peace, or more alive than love. Love takes us to the highest heights, but when you reach those heights there’s a long way to fall. People get the wrong idea about my tattoo and think that I’m somehow cold to love or that I think it’s senseless. But nobody gets “love sucks” tattooed on them that hasn’t been deeply affected by the highs and lows of falling in love, being in love and having that love taken away.

What do you look for in a boyfriend or girlfriend? Or both – let’s not limit ourselves.

Intelligence and passion. I look for someone who inspires me.

Do you have any advice for women who want to be the next Angela White (aside from “Please wait until I am done being the current Angela White”)?

I certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to be the next “Angela White.” Everyone should strive to pave their own path and build their own brand. If anything, I would tell them to be true to their own desires and pursue their passion. And also, I’ll always be Angela White.

What’s next for you? What are you working on?

Since winning AVN Female Performer of the Year I am being booked more than ever. My shooting schedule is insane, so expect to see a lot of content this year. I’m working on some really big movies, both for my own company and others. My next movie will be the fourth installment of the Angela Loves Women series. I’m also working on some very unique showcase movies, but I can’t give away any more than that just yet.

Anything special you want to say to the fans?

Thank you for all of the love and support you have given me throughout my career. It means the world to me to know that I have had a positive impact on so many people’s lives and I hope my fans know that they have also had a immensely positive impact on mine.
