2014 AVN Award: Best Romance

The latest entry in New Sensations’ Erotic Stories line marks the solo directorial debut of Jacky St. James, whose screenplays fueled the studio’s Romance revival. With longtime collaborator Eddie Powell on camera, she gets her directing career off to an impressive start.

Basically a three-character movie, it’s a kind of chamber piece, intimate and personal, a psychological portrait of a woman torn between two very different men. And it’s free of the sentimentality that often mars male-created “couples porn.”

Remy LaCroix and Tommy Pistol play a struggling young couple relying on the generosity of a wealthy playboy (Xander Corvus) who puts them up in his mansion until they can get back on their feet. Unknown to Tommy, Remy and Xander have been involved in a rocky relationship. Their back story is slowly, artfully revealed, not fully understood until the final scene.

The script comes alive thanks to the performances of the three leads, which were surely shaped and guided by the director. LaCroix is superb as the conflicted heroine, conveying ample passion in her sex scenes with the two guys. Corvus and Pistol match her in believability, with Xander providing the stud power in three of the four sex scenes. His trysts with the ever-hot India Summer and the high-energy Bailey Blue seem integral to the story, not just tacked on. — Reviewed by Jared Rutter, XBIZ Editors Choice
